Battery associations launch initiative to ensure lead-battery industry’s positive global impact

Wed, 01/22/2020 - 11:34 -- Paul Crompton

Lead and lead-battery industry groups have adopted seven guiding principles designed to serve as a best practice in the protection of workers and the industry’s wider environmental impact.

The groups will develop performance indicators and policies to ensure continuous improvement in the management of lead exposure and emissions and minimise the environmental impact of used lead batteries.

Industry associations join forces to improve global lead battery recycling practices

Lead industry associations across North America and Europe have signed a memorandum of cooperation to add their weight to efforts to reduce the impact of informal recycling of lead batteries around the world.

The International Lead Association (ILA), Battery Council International, the European battery association EUROBAT and the Association of Battery Recyclers signed the pact as part of a programme of responsible material stewardship.

Pb is missing link in EU battery strategy

Fri, 04/12/2019 - 14:01 -- John Shepherd

EU leaders have released a long-awaited ‘strategic action plan’ that says batteries should be at the heart of future industrial strategy.

But lead-acid was not even mentioned (unlike lithium) in the document— published as part of the outgoing European Commission’s ‘State of the Energy Union’ report: ‘Implementation of the Strategic Action Plan on Batteries: Building a Strategic Battery Value Chain in Europe.’

ILA calls for new EU strategy on batteries

Fri, 04/05/2019 - 11:45 -- John Shepherd

Europe has been urged to develop a new industrial strategy to “champion” all batteries, including lead-acid.

The managing director of the International Lead Association (ILA), Dr Andy Bush (pictured), said the creation of a Batteries Alliance and a ‘batteries action plan’ for the EU, has been “one of the successes of the European Commission”.

However, Bush said it was a “weakness” for EU policymakers to “focus predominantly on one battery technology, omitting to support Europe’s existing strengths in this area and the jobs it generates in our societies”.

EU red tape ‘risks exporting battery jobs’, ILA warns

Mon, 10/08/2018 - 00:00 -- John Shepherd

Thousands of battery jobs risk being axed in Europe and ‘exported’ to overseas competitors as a result of unnecessary and restrictive legislation, lead-acid industry bosses have warned.

A European Commission proposal for an “in-effect ban” on the use of four chemical compounds, mainly used in the manufacture of lead batteries, is still on the table, the head of the International Lead Association (ILA) Dr Andy Bush has warned.

German battery chiefs warn EU over Giga cash dash for lithium

Mon, 02/19/2018 - 11:21 -- John Shepherd
German battery chiefs warn EU over Giga cash dash for lithium

Battery industry leaders in Germany say there is currently “no business case” for “politically-inspired” plans by the European Union to build at least 10 Gigafactories across the bloc for lithium-based batteries.

EU energy chief Maroš Šefčovič said last week the Gigafactories would be needed to produce “green European batteries” for new electric vehicles produced in Europe— and to combat Asia’s increasing dominance in the EV batteries sector.

EU ‘aware of lead’s value’ to batteries industry

Mon, 10/23/2017 - 11:03 -- John Shepherd
EU ‘aware of lead’s value’ to batteries industry

European Commission chiefs have not ruled out the participation of the lead-acid industry in a proposed ‘batteries alliance’ for Europe— BBB has learned.

Lead producers called on the Commission to urgently rethink its proposals last week, after EU energy chief Maroš Šefčovič used an industry summit in Brussels to float proposals to invest in large-scale battery cells production— but failed to outline support for Europe’s powerhouse lead-acid battery industry.

EU urged to include lead in ‘batteries alliance’

Mon, 10/16/2017 - 12:59 -- John Shepherd
EU urged to include lead in ‘batteries alliance’

Lead producers are urging EU leaders to urgently rethink proposals to invest in setting up a Europe-wide ‘batteries alliance’ that would fail to include the region’s powerhouse lead-acid battery industry.

The call came after EU energy chief Maroš Šefčovič (pictured) told an industry summit he hosted in Brussels that a blueprint for the ‘EU Battery Alliance’ was needed to “strongly support the establishment of a full value chain of batteries in Europe, with large-scale battery cells production and the circular economy at the core”.

Lead-acid ‘sustainable as toilet paper’

Mon, 08/21/2017 - 10:40 -- News Editor
Lead-acid ‘sustainable as toilet paper’

Lead-acid batteries are among the top five rated consumer products for sustainability – second only to toilet tissue, according to a new report.

The Sustainability Consortium’s (TSC) 2017 Impact Report – ‘The Call for Collective Action Across Supply Chains’, said lead-acid batteries share an average high level of sustainability along with household paper products, leafy vegetables, computers and diapers.
