UltraCharge raising AUD2.5m ‘to accelerate Li-ion tech’

Israel-based lithium and flow battery developer UltraCharge has told BBB it is finalising a raise of AUD2.5 million ($1.9m) to boost battery tech investments.

The CEO of Australia-listed UltraCharge Kobi Ben-Shabat (pictured) said the cash would be used in part to expand development of titanium dioxide (TiO2) as an alternative to graphite in the anodes of lithium-ion batteries, in a bid to improve fast charging capabilities, lifespan and safety.

Investment scheme boost for Russian battery firm

Russian lead-acid battery maker AKOM has been selected to take part in a government-backed programme to boost one of the country’s industrial regions.

AKOM, which this year marks its 15th anniversary since launching battery production in the southwestern Samara region, said the move allows it to take advantage of tax breaks and other incentives to step up investment and production.

VW unveils $60bn batteries investment plan

Volkswagen has announced plans to invest more than EUR50 billion ($60bn) in battery cells and related technology, towards the electrification of its entire model portfolio by 2030 “at the latest”.

CEO Matthias Mueller (pictured) said the group has already launched a global tender process to find manufacturing partners in China, Europe and North America— as VW will “need more than 150GWh of lithium-ion battery capacity annually by 2025 for its own e-fleet alone”.

Investors boost UK lithium mine plans

UK start-up Cornish Lithium has raised GBP1 million ($1.2m) from three international investors to kick-start moves towards drilling for lithium in Cornwall.

The company said its “initial focus” will be to collate a digital log of “all relevant data on lithium occurrences in Cornwall” before applying for drilling permits.

Britain surprises all with £246 million battery jumpstart

The minute UK battery and energy storage market was taken by surprise last week with UK business secretary Greg Clark’s (pictured) statement to invigorate the UK energy storage scene.

The launch of the first phase of a £246 million ($322M) government investment into battery technology is said to ensure the UK ‘builds on its strengths and leads the world in the design, development and manufacture of electric batteries’.
