Bipolar developer hits out at DoE choices

An angry lead-acid battery developer lashed out last week at one of the premier US lithium battery administrators on why the US Department of Energy (DoE) was failing to support the lead-acid sector.

Ed Shaffer (pictured), founder and CEO of Advanced Battery Concepts, took a verbal swipe at George Crabtree, director of the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR) at Argonne National Laboratory, who was addressing the Battery Council International annual meeting on developments in lithium ion.

Fuel cell firm transformed by Amazon deal

In a move which may send shock waves through the traditional motive power lead acid market, Plug Power, the Latham, New York, fuel cell manufacturer, has signed a multi-year contract with internet retail giant Amazon that includes the opportunity for Amazon to buy up to 23% of Plug Power.

Amazon will begin using Plug Power’s fuel cells to power its industrial equipment, including forklifts, in 11 of Amazon's fulfillment centres this year.

Enersys wins military order

Lead acid battery maker EnerSys said it was recently awarded a long-term, US$71 million contract for production and supply of batteries used by all branches of the U.S. military in combat and tactical vehicles, as well as generators.

EnerSys will be supplying Thin Plate Pure Lead Hawker ARMASAFE Plus batteries for three years with an option for two additional years with the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA).

Hydro Tasmania set to choose Li-ion over Pb-A for BESS

Hydro Tasmania is set to install a 300kWh lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to power an Australian Island.

Although not decided the company plans to install a lithium-ion battery with around 800kW power transfer for the AUS$12.88million (US$9.7m) Flinders Island project.
