Mercedes announces plans for an EV lithium-ion battery recycling plant in Germany

Wed, 12/01/2021 - 14:24 -- Paul Crompton

Vehicle OEM Mercedes-Benz, a subsidiary of Daimler, is planning the construction of a battery recycling factory in Kuppenheim, Germany.

Start of operations is planned for 2023, depending on the outcome of discussions with public authorities.

The plan is part of the German firm’s ‘closing the loop’ philosophy to recover raw materials at the end of a battery's life.

Mercedes already ensures the battery housings, cables and the power rails can be recycled, and is involved in the research and development of new recycling technologies and their establishment on the market.

Part of the work involves working with specialised partner companies, and participating in funding and research projects focused on the reuse of raw materials.

Mercedes-Benz said it will go all electric by the end of the decade— with the caveat “where market conditions allow”.

Next year, Mercedes-Benz will have battery electric vehicles in all segments the company serves and, from 2025 onwards, all newly launched vehicle architectures will be electric-only.

Ongoing battery research

Last year, Mercedes-Benz announced plans to research ways to design cobalt and other “critical” materials like lithium out of lithium-ion batteries.

The OEM is looking at a variety of post-lithium-ion batteries— mainly based on manganese— that use less critical resources, as it investigates ways of increasing the energy density of its technology.

Work starts on latest Mercedes-Benz EV battery plant

Mercedes-Benz has made a ceremonial start on building what will be the latest in its global network of electric vehicle battery manufacturing plants.

The 12,000 sq m Brühl facility near Stuttgart, Germany, at the site of the Mercedes-Benz Untertürkheim plant, will be “carbon neutral” and become one of several of the car giant’s battery factories spanning seven locations on three continents.

The plant will support lithium-ion battery production for the Daimler-owned company’s recently-launched range of EQ vehicles.

Daimler takes NorthStar partnership to next level

Tue, 04/09/2019 - 09:35 -- Hugh Finzel

Swedish-American battery manufacturer NorthStar has agreed a deal to supply Daimler with wireless battery monitoring systems for the Pure Lead AGM batteries it supplies to the auto giant.

Germany’s Daimler— parent company of Mercedes-Benz, and the largest truck manufacturer in the world— will install a tailored version of NorthStar’s ACE battery monitoring systems (named AGM Truck Test) at all of its service centres in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

NorthStar’s ACE wireless battery monitoring systems was launched for the telecom segment in 2017, and subsequently for the transportation segment in 2018. The AGM Truck Test tracks the battery’s performance throughout its service life, and ensures batteries are only replaced when they reach the end of their reliable life.

Work starts on Mercedes’ Alabama EV battery plant

Mon, 10/15/2018 - 00:00 -- Hugh Finzel

Daimler has broken ground for an electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant in Alabama for its Mercedes-Benz subsidiary.

A ceremony marking the start of construction at Tuscaloosa, just seven miles from Mercedes existing vehicle production site, came just weeks after German auto firms indicated they could pull the plug on new investments in battery manufacturing in the US, if forced to pay increased tariffs under the Trump administration’s “national security” review.

The battery plant is part of a US$1 billion investment in the US that will cover two million square feet— twice the size of Mercedes’ nearby site. The US plant will form part of an eight-strong global battery production network including plants in Germany, China and Thailand.

Battery production at the Mercedes-Benz factory in Untertuerkheim, near Stuttgart, will begin at the end of the decade.

After workers, worried about their jobs, went on strike last month, Daimler reassured them that Untertuerkheim will be developed into a high-tech ‘competence centre’ for integrating the electric powertrain into production, testing electric-drive prototypes, and manufacturing batteries and other components for electric cars.
