Redflow selects Thailand for battery factory

Australian flow battery firm Redflow has chosen Thailand as the base for its new Southeast Asia manufacturing plant.

Redflow said in a 17 August Australian Stock Exchange announcement it had formed a new entity – Redflow (Thailand) Limited – to negotiate a lease on premises in a free trade zone and apply for licensing and regulatory permits.

Redflow moving into “high demand” sectors with funding round

Australian battery maker Redflow has launched an AUD14.5 million ($11.5m) funding round “to target sustainable delivery of its zinc-bromine flow batteries to high demand areas” such as telecoms and remote/off-grid power.

The announcement follows the Brisbane-based company’s strategic review last May, which set out plans to “transition” manufacturing to Southeast Asia from South America, cut supply chain costs and implement “cost-down projects” to reduce delivered product manufacturing cost “by at least 30% over the next 18 months”.

Australia issues draft home storage fire-risk rules

Proposed regulations in Australia that would prioritise fire safety for the use of lithium-based batteries inside homes have been opened to consultation.

The draft regulations by Standards Australia follow reports that emerged earlier this year that new guidelines could ban the introduction of on-site lithium-ion battery storage in homes.

Australian flow-battery manufacturer Redflow has supplied six energy storage units to a Dutch dairy farm.

The deal is being seen as evidence that the company is going to put its energy into industrial and telecommunications backup applications – especially after the company’s strategic review suggested that the residential market does not provide a model for long-term growth.

Redflow suspends battery deliveries amidst ‘impurities’ probe

Australian energy storage firm Redflow Limited has suspended delivery of its flow batteries while the company investigates potential performance issues.

The Queensland-based company said laboratory testing of electrolyte samples from one “specifically-identified batch of 10 batteries indicate that they may be at risk of failure due to the presence of impurities in battery electrolyte”.

Redflow opens zinc bromide flow battery laboratory

Australian firm Redflow has opened a battery laboratory to progress its software and to enable its zinc bromide flow batteries to be used with multiple inverters.

The Adelaide based laboratory will develop battery management system software for Redflow’s 10kWh residential battery, which is being launched this month.

Redflow gets nod to move into European ESS market

Australian battery developer and manufacturer Redflow’s core zinc-bromide flow battery has received CE approval – paving the way for sales in Europe.

The approval allows the zinc-bromide flow batteries (ZMB) to be available in commercial quantities and Redflow’s partners to integrate them for use in energy storage systems in Europe.

Australia’s battery maker RedFlow has completed trials of a large-scale energy storage system (ESS) with its zinc-bromine flow batteries.

The company charged and discharged 48 batteries in four strings, producing 50V to 720V on a DC bus coupled and tested on a 14kW inverter connected to the grid.
