Tesla opts for Samsung over Panasonic for Australia project

The Powerpacks Tesla is providing for its South Australia battery project will use lithium-ion battery cells from Samsung SDI— instead of those from its long-term partner Panasonic, BBB has confirmed.

South Australia’s state government announced in July it had chosen the US tech giant to deliver “the world’s largest” battery system in the region.

Battery boost for South Australia grid

South Australia is to get a second large-scale battery to bolster the state’s power grid security in in a project valued at around AUD30m ($23.6m).

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is providing up to AUD12m ($9.5m) in funding for power company ElectraNet to build the 30MW/8MWh lithium-ion battery at the Dalrymple substation north of Yorketown.

South Australia inks deal for more solar, storage

South Australia has signed a deal to build a 150MW solar thermal power plant in the state with eight hours of molten salt energy storage.

The AUD650 million ($510m) Aurora Solar Energy Project, to be built and operated near the town of Port Augusta by US-based utility SolarReserve, is designed to supply all of the state government’s power needs, premier Jay Weatherill said.

Tesla chosen for world’s biggest battery in Australia

Tesla is to deliver the world’s largest lithium-ion battery in South Australia – with a pledge to supply the system within 100 days or offer it free of charge.

Under the terms of the deal, with South Australia’s state government,  (the financial details of which have not been released), Tesla will provide the 100MW/129MWh Powerpack system to be paired with French utility Neoen’s Hornsdale wind farm near Jamestown.

Considering lithium-ion as the only viable energy storage technology in an A$550 million ($423 million) energy plan is “unwise”, say a scientific research group in Australia.

A better option for large-scale storage would be flow batteries Dr. Sam Behrens, the research manager at CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation), was quoted as saying to ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation).
