Agratas, the global battery business of India’s Tata Group, confirmed today it would build Britain’s biggest battery manufacturing site near Bridgwater, Somerset.
It said the 40GWh £4 billion ($5 billion) factory is set to be the biggest gigafactory in the UK and by the early 2030s will contribute almost half the projected battery manufacturing capacity required for the UK automotive sector. It will be Tata’s first gigafactory outside India.
The company expects to create up to 4,000 local jobs, with many thousands more in the UK supply chain.
It will make high-performance prismatic cells. Tom Flack, CEO of Agratas, said: “Our multi-billion-pound investment will bring state-of-the-art technology to Somerset, helping to supercharge Britain’s transition to electric mobility whilst creating thousands of jobs in the process.”
Construction work starts in the spring and battery production is due to take off in 2026. Initial customers will be Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Motors. The company plans to make batteries for two-wheelers and commercial vehicles, as well as energy storage.
