US car maker Tesla has applied for regulatory permission to expand its Shanghai battery plant to start making pouch battery cells.
Reuters reports an undated public notice setting out the proposed expansion to 1.75 million powertrain battery units per year, up from 1.25 million now.
It is not clear from the notice whether Tesla plans actually go ahead with the expansion in China or is merely seeking clearance for future capacity expansion, the report said.
Tesla did not comment.
The notice said Tesla is also seeking permission to produce pouch-type battery cells. A trial production line would have initial annual capacity to make 20,000Ah of cells.
The carmaker said last month its next Megapack factory will be built in Shanghai and will be capable of producing 10,000 energy storage Megapacks per year.
