Japanese based firm Toshiba T&D Europe S.p.a (TTDE) is set to handover a 1MW-1MWh lithium Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to a Italian utility firm.
The handover to Italian Transmission System Operator Terna S.p.a. follows successful tests of Toshiba’s lithium titanate oxide SCiB™ equipped BESS.
The BESS, designed and installed by TTDE, will provide primary and secondary frequency regulation, voltage regulation and power balancing on Sardinia. It is also capable of off grid operation and black start.
Terna S.p.a., is setting up storage labs in Sardinia and Sicily to investigate different battery storage technologies.
Toshiba is the first of seven battery suppliers installing systems in Sardinia, including Samsung SDi and Siemens.
Back in 2011 Toshiba Corporation entered the European utility market by buying a 67% equity stake in Ansaldo Trasmissione & Distribuzione S.p.A (Ansaldo T&D).
Toshiba is also participating in a research project with a Spanish utility, a BESS research project in the U.K. and in June won a contract to supply a BESS in Finland.
