Vulcan Renewables, a renewable energy partnership, is developing the UK’s first biomass renewable energy facility in Doncaster. The new plant will be the first green energy plant to convert crops into gas.
Grass and maize provided by local famers will be converted into gas to be fed into the mains gas pipeline.
The facility will consume around 35 000 tonnes of crops a year, these will be grown within a ten-mile radius of the site to minimise carbon emissions from transportation.
When fully commissioned the biogas anaerobic digester will generate sufficient gas to fuel the equivalent of 2 500 homes and the by-product will be an odourless fertiliser, which can go back on the fields.
