US battery maker SimpliPhi has announced plans to enter the commercial and industrial market with its modular high-voltage, cobalt-free battery.
Because the batteries are modular, the company claims facilities with on-site generation will be able to spread back-up batteries across a number of buildings in the same location, eliminating the need for huge battery banks.
They are also compatible with industry standard single- and three-phase inverters for 250kWh to MWhs of reserve power for off-grid, back-up and peak shaving.
In its report on C&I ESSs, industry analyst Navigant Research said that despite substantial recent market growth for energy storage systems (ESS), where commercial and industrial buildings were concerned, the technology was still in its infancy.
“[Energy storage systems] for C&I buildings are both poorly understood and undervalued by many stakeholders in the industry, however regulatory reforms and technological advances will help bring C&I energy storage into the mainstream,” the report said.
It went on to predict that by 2025, revenues in the sector could reach $10.8 billion from $968 million in 2016.
