Vianode has officially commenced site preparation for its new synthetic graphite facility, Via TWO, in St. Thomas, Ontario.
The development marks a significant step in the company’s North American expansion strategy and is expected to generate hundreds of skilled jobs in the region.
The project will establish North America’s largest low-emission synthetic anode graphite plant, with operations scheduled to start in 2028. Anode graphite is a vital material for electric vehicle batteries and energy storage applications. The chosen site, located in Yarmouth Yards Industrial Park, was selected after a comprehensive evaluation process. St. Thomas offers proximity to automotive customers, access to Ontario’s clean electricity grid, and strong local and provincial support.
Subject to a definitive agreement, the Government of Ontario will provide a loan of up to CA$670 million to support the investment.
“Today marks an important step towards a resilient North American battery supply chain,” said Burkhard Straube, CEO of Vianode. “Ontario and the city of St. Thomas have been strong partners from day one, and Via TWO will bring industrial-scale, low-emission graphite to market through a phased build-out that supports customers, communities and the clean-energy transition.”
The phased multi-billion-dollar project will deliver up to 150,000 tonnes annually, enough synthetic graphite for around two million EVs per year. Initial operations are expected to create 300 jobs, rising to 1,000 at full capacity.
