Wärtsilä has confirmed its tenth BESS project in Australia, supplying a 100MW/223MWh system for renewable energy retailer Flow Power.
The Bennetts Creek battery energy storage system, located beside the Morwell Terminal Station in Victoria, will deliver frequency regulation services, bolster grid stability and support Australia’s wider shift towards renewable generation. The order was placed in Q4 2025.
The Bennetts Creek BESS project is the first collaboration between Wärtsilä and Flow Power, joining the retailer’s growing pipeline of renewable and storage assets. The project is expected to provide firmed supply for retail contracts, alongside community benefits and essential ancillary services. Frequency regulation will form a key revenue stream, complementing energy arbitrage and helping the system meet compliance requirements as ageing thermal generators retire.
“Flow Power shares our commitment to accelerating Australia’s clean energy goals, and we look forward to collaborating on their largest project to date,” said Suraj Narayan, managing director, Wärtsilä Energy Storage Australia. He added that the project shows how advanced batteries can deliver reliability and revenue as the National Electricity Market evolves.
The system will use Wärtsilä’s Quantum hardware, a modular and compact ESS platform, together with the company’s GEMS software to manage plant‑wide optimisation, grid response and battery cycling. Delivery will take place under an engineered equipment contract, supported by a long‑term service agreement.
Construction of the BESS project begins in 2026, with operation scheduled for 2028. Wärtsilä’s Australian footprint will exceed 6GWh of installed capacity once complete.
