The Shanghai Environmental Protection Industry Association and Shanghai Service Federation have announced they are seeking ways to regulate the disposal of automotive batteries, according to the Shanghai Daily. The batteries, which include those used in cars and electric bikes, are generally lead-acid storage batteries.
At the end of 2012, there were 5.5 million vehicles and mopeds on the streets of Shanghai. The number of batteries that were discarded was estimated at 85,000 tonnes.
Only 10% of those batteries discarded are collected by licensed organisations. The environmental agencies are looking to ways to counter the growth in incorrect disposal and trade of these batteries, which can affect both soil and water.
