Allye Energy, the UK-based start-up, has announced a new range of repurposed EV battery energy storage products under the “MegaMAX” name to tackle grid stability challenges.
Its new high-capacity battery storage solutions are the MAX1000 and MAX1500.
These are said to combine repurposed electric vehicle (EV) batteries with AI control systems in a single integrated platform.
The MAX1000 is said to have 1MWh storage with 840kW of power and the MAX1500 has a duration of 1.5MWh storage and 1.25MW power.
The battery chemistry used, either as a single or mixed format, is nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) or nickel-cobalt-aluminium (NCA). There is the option to use LFP as well, although it said this could reduce the capacity.
The firm said any combination chemistry could be integrated, but a single chemistry LFP system could reduce capacity by approximately 25%, according to the MAX1000 spec sheet.
These energy storage products are aimed at tackling the issue of stability challenges the electrical grid may face during the energy transition, with 50-80% of electrification projects facing severe power constraints.
The firm cited the recent Spain and Portugal blackouts as a way in which modern grid systems can collapse when frequency deviations cascade throughout the system.
The company claim that its battery energy storage systems have rapid response capabilities to fluctuations in frequency, which includes an instantaneous provision of synthetic inertia. This would mean power is injected or absorbed to maintain stability.
Traditional power plants would provide this inertia naturally, but the firm said it is a difficult task to maintain 50Hz frequency with renewable-heavy grids.
The systems are said to reduce strain on constrained grid infrastructure while enabling participation in lucrative flexibility markets. For users, the company claim that it can lead to up to 50% lower energy costs as well as new revenue streams.
The firm said that the MAX1000 is available now, with the MAX1500 due to launch in summer 2025.
