US-based energy infrastructure company Ameresco is to deploy battery storage as part of an “energy resilient project” for the US Department of Defense.
Under the US$133.5 million contract with the Defense Logistics Agency Energy, Ameresco will install a microgrid to integrate 4 megawatts/8 megawatt-hours of battery energy storage with 20MW of onsite solar and 4MW of gas-fired backup generation at Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA), Texas.
Ameresco will also provide upgrades to the energy resilience and reliability of 900 buildings across five military installations— all supporting critical energy loads and providing backup for critical facilities in the event of a power outage or grid disruption.
The company did not disclose details of the battery technology to be used in the project.
Ameresco’s executive vice-president and general manager for federal solutions, Nicole Bulgarino, said: “This project will provide critical infrastructure improvements to JBSA through energy conservation, and will enhance the energy security of the installation through reliable backup generation assets.”
Construction on the project will begin in the summer of 2021.
