Amprius Technologies has boosted its global manufacturing footprint with a deal to make its SiCore lithium-ion batteries in South Korea.
The manufacturing agreement will see an unnamed South Korean battery manufacturer make the silicon anode cells at its Korean facility.
The South Korean partner, which has experience in making advanced lithium-ion batteries across a range of form factors and cell chemistries, will manufacture the SiCore cells to Amprius’ specifications.
US firm Amprius said that by expanding its manufacturing footprint into new regions it could strengthen its supply chain and position itself to serve global customers with greater speed and efficiency.
The latest deal will allow Amprius to streamline logistics and accelerate delivery timelines for customers across the globe, the firm said. The company also said the deal would mean it can deliver cells at volume and compete more effectively across global markets.
The lithium-ion cells will be marketed at aerospace, defence, and electric mobility applications.
The latest deal builds upon Amprius’ existing 1.8GWh of contracted production capacity.
BEST first reported the launch of the SiCore battery range in January 2024.
The SiCore batteries are based on a proprietary silicon anode material system.
At the start of May, we reported the California-headquartered company had launched a production-ready 450Wh/kg version of the cell – the original battery was 400Wh/kg with a 1,200 cycle life at full depth of discharge.
