BASF Stationary Energy Storage and Japanese ceramics manufacturer NGK Insulators have released a container-type sodium-sulphur NAS battery, the NAS Model L24.
The companies said the jointly-developed battery has a significantly lower degradation rate of less than 1% per year. This is due to reduced corrosion in battery cells. An improved thermal management system in the battery modules enables a longer continuous discharge of six hours at 200kW DC, they claimed.
They reckon the new battery will mean a 20% reduction in investment cost over a project lifetime. It can provide a stable power supply over six hours or longer, the companies said.
It complies with energy storage installation safety standards, such as UL1973 and UL9540A. BASF will begin deliveries in the second half of 2024. Compliance with Japanese regulations is still not in place.
