US power utility Con Edison has launched a pilot scheme with Eos Energy Storage to install the latter’s technology in New York City.
The pilot is intended to demonstrate the benefits of distributed energy storage and is due to commence in early 2014. The project includes the deployment of a 1MW/6MWh grid-scale battery backed by a proprietary zinc hybrid cathode technology, which has a 75% round-trip efficiency rate and 10,000-cycle/30-year lifetime.
The programme is being supported by $250,000 in funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), which will be matched with private funds.
If successful, the technology could defer utility infrastructure upgrades and enhance power quality and reliability.
