German vehicle manufacturer Daimler has signalled its intention to bring inductive charging technology to market with its latest deal.
The strategic partnership with Qualcomm Technologies, a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, will see the company focusing on implementing the U.S. firms technology in its EV and PHEV vehicles.
The OEM will look to use the Qualcomm’s Halo™ Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging (WEVC) as part of Qualcom’s Wireless Power Transfer 2.0 high performance program for EVs.
Daimler is the fifth of the world’s top vehicle OEMs – Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford, Chevrolet and Mercedes-Benz – working on inductive charging technology.
Around 57,000 wireless-charging equipped vehicles were sold globally in 2014, but analysts IHS forecast this to rise to 17.5 million vehicles in 2020.
