A new lobbying body, the Energy Storage Coalition, launched last week in Brussels in order to influence European Union parliamentarians and policymakers.
The coalition brings together Breakthrough Energy, European Association for Storage of Energy (EASE), Solar Power Europe and Wind Europe.
Lidia Tamellini, policy officer at EASE, told BEST the aim is to bring awaerwness of energy storage within the energy system. It will target politicians and policymakers in the EU, which has already emphasised energy storage. Kadri Simson, European Commissioner for Energy, told a launch that energy storage is key to building a future-proof, resilient and decarbonised energy system.
Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe, said: “Last winter, EU renewables generated more electricity than fossil fuels, it’s clear that solar and renewables can power Europe in all seasons. We need strong energy infrastructure to make year-round renewables the norm. That means taking energy storage seriously and getting the grid ready.”
