Swedish zinc-ion battery cell technology company Enerpoly have announced the opening of the 70,000ft² (6500m²) facility in Roserberg, North Stockholm. The megafactory is designed for a 100MWh through-put per annum, which it hopes to reach in 2026.
As previously reported in BEST the company received a grant for the battery megafactory in December 2023 and in July 2024 acquired dry electrode production line manufacturing equipment from Nylor. Enerpoly hope to accelerate production capabilities, to lower costs, waste and energy consumption and deliver more sustainable energy storage solutions.
Some benefits of the zinc-ion battery cell that the company promote are:
- A water-based electrolyte, so non-flammable
- less expense, as zinc is cheaper than lithium to produce
- the ability to operate across a wider temperature range and require less maintenance than lithium
- tend to last longer: up to 20 years as opposed to lithium’s average of 12 years.
Energy density is obviously lower than lithium. Enerpolys’ zinc-ion cell energy density is 106.4Wh/Kg. The company state their batteries are suited for 2 to 10 hour durations, which means they will be useful for load-shifting and building a more resilient grid. Further applications include back-up power and safety-critical applications including for maritime use, critical infrastructure and densely populated urban areas. They currently boast a 100% European supply chain.
Enerpolys’ CEO Eloisa de Castro comments: ” Our new manufacturing facility marks a pivotal moment in our journey toward revolutionising the energy industry. With EPIC, our focus is firmly on driving sustainable innovation, and meeting the growing demand for renewable energy storage by scaling up our production, we can deliver first-of-all-kind deployments in partnership with utilities and battery system integrators across Europe and globally”.
