Iron flow battery company ESS is benefiting from a $10 million grant for a long-duration battery storage project run in partnership with Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD). The financing is from the California Energy Commission as part of its decarbonisation efforts.
ESS said the grant will help it demonstrate a 3.6MW/8-hour iron flow battery project. That will set the foundation for other large-scale battery deployments and manufacturing in Sacramento.
The company said its long-duration energy storage project is in its early phases at SMUD’s Sacramento Power Academy. In September 2023, ESS commissioned six Energy Warehouse systems for SMUD. This was part of a 200MW/2GWh framework agreement.
Its existing 450KW/2,400KWh Energy Warehouse system at the SMUD academy provides insights through performance testing and more.
