North American all-iron redox flow battery firm Energy Storage Systems has appointed a utility specialist to its board of directors.
Portland, Oregon-based ESS named former San Diego Gas & Electric President Michael R. Niggli as its latest board of directors member.
The move positions ESS to better promote their technology for the grid-scale market, especially as renewable energy use grows at the utility level.
Niggli said: “I have long taken the position that different types of energy storage are essential to modern grid operations.
“This company’s all-iron flow batteries offer a compelling combination of utility-grade performance with key safety and environmental advantages, the ability to support the integration of renewables, with a low Level Cost of Storage.”
Craig Evans, ESS’s chief executive officer, said: “He shares our belief that long-duration energy storage solutions like ours are poised to take off in the coming years.”
