Sunvault Energy and Edison Power Company have created what they claim to be the world’s largest supercapacitor.
At 10,000 Farads there is no other graphene supercapacitor built to this size in the world, the companies’ claim.
The graphene storage units are the size of a paperback novel, and can be connected together to create a larger form of electrical storage.
CEO of Sunvault, Gary Monaghan explains: “This technology is more accurately defined as a hybrid, bringing the power density associated to battery together with the high impact fast charging known to capacitors.”
Monaghan estimates this type of graphene base supercapacitor will cost about $100 per kWh and as low as $50 by the end of 2015.
Currently the cost to manufacture a lithium battery is around $500 per/ kWh. Tesla has said it hopes to reach the $150 per kWh mark by 2020 after it opens its giga-factory.
