South Korean flow battery company H2 has won an order for what it calls the largest flow battery project in Spain.
The eight-hour duration 1.1MW/8.8MWh vanadium flow battery is being commissioned by the Spanish government’s energy research institute, CIUDEN. H2 said it will supply the entire battery system, comprising its newly developed modular three-block flow battery, the EnerFlow 640. It measures 12.2×4.9×6 metres.
The 4–12 hour battery has maximum power of 405kW and capacity of 2,857kWh. It can operate at temperatures ranging from -20° to 50°C. It comes with an integrated battery management system.
H2 said it plans to access the European long-duration energy storage market via Spain. It also has a 20MWh project in California, US.
Dr. Shin Han, founder and CEO of H2, said the company is planning to build a second vanadium flow battery factory in South Korea soon to secure gigawatt-hour scale production.
