Ignitis Group has started construction of one of the first utility-scale BESS in Lithuania, with installations planned across Kelmė, Mažeikiai and Kruonis.
The three sites will collectively deliver 291MW of power and 582MWh of storage capacity, marking a major step forward in the country’s energy transition.
The €130 million investment will support the integration of renewable energy, enhance grid flexibility, and improve system reliability. Two of the BESS in Lithuania will be located near existing wind farms operated by Ignitis Renewables, while the third will be developed alongside the Kruonis Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant, managed by Ignitis Gamyba.
“Power generation from renewables is growing in Lithuania, which makes battery energy storage systems an important guarantee of reliability,” said Darius Maikštėnas, CEO of Ignitis Group. “They make the network more flexible, enable efficient use of green energy and help maintain stability even through heavy fluctuations. Battery energy storage systems are a key component of green transition as they will help integrate more green capacities, balance the fluctuations in power prices as well as reduce them,”
BESS installations are strategically placed near operating power plants to manage local system loads more efficiently and support national energy goals. The systems will also strengthen regional infrastructure and contribute to price stability in the energy market.
Construction of the BESS in Lithuania is set to begin this year, with commercial operations expected by 2027. Rolls-Royce Solutions will supply and integrate the battery systems, which will include cyber security protections aligned with Lithuania’s National Security Strategy to prevent unauthorised remote access.
