Hydrogen storage system for Hamburg

Mon, 04/15/2013 - 18:36 -- Ruth Williams

Hamburg, Germany, is soon to have a hydrogen energy storage system installed by Hydrogenics. It uses a proton exchange membrane system and electrolyser technology to store energy in hydrogen that has been generated by other forms of renewable power.

The Hydrogenics system will produce hydrogen fuel using excess electrical power generated in Hamburg, mostly from the many wind energy systems in the area.

The project will see Hydrogenics in partnership with E.ON, who will be managing the facility where the technology is used.

The National Innovation Programme is funding the project, which marks a further commitment by the German government to renewable energy and storage technology.
