Gaelectric’s compressed air energy storage (CAES) project in Northern Ireland is set to receive €6.47 million ($7million) of European Union funding.
The renewable energy firm started plans for the energy infrastructure back in 2013 which will become Europe’s only CEAS when it comes online.
The CAES Project in Larne is designed to release energy to transmission system operators generating up to 330 MW for periods of up to six.
The £300million ($468million) project utilises salt deposits suitable for compressed air energy storage which are unique to Ireland’s east Antrim coast, and a number of other UK locations.
Larne and Northern Ireland will become the blueprint for CAES storage and the integration of renewable energy sources across the rest of the United Kingdom and Europe.”
