Japanese authorities are looking to change the way the country uses energy by installing smart meters in every home and business by the early 2020s, and installing 5.3m fuel cells in homes nationwide by 2030.
This ambitious plan is included in a report on tackling climate change submitted to the UN by the Japanese government.
These measures will be combined with a push to promote the use of renewable energy in the next three years.
The report also stated that nuclear reactors are to be restarted following safety testing. The reactors will operate with greater thermal power generation efficiency, according to the report.
