Johnson Battery Technologies (JBT) and BP have developed technology that will manage thermal runaway situations that can cause lithium-ion batteries to short circuit and overheat.
The cells use glass electrolytes instead of liquid, which means they were less volatile, claims JBT CEO and founder Dr Lonnie Johnson.
The technology paves the way for wireless and remote applications not previously possible because of the volatility of lithium-ion batteries at high temperatures.
JBT claims the new batteries can withstand temperatures of up to 150C, as well as higher and lower voltages than traditional batteries.
The batteries also have a much higher energy density than same-sized traditional lithium-ion batteries, said Johnson.
