Demand management KiWi Power has been awarded an Energy Entrepreneurs Fund grant by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) for its UK Demand Response Acceleration Project.
Thirty projects have been awarded a share of up to £16m (£24.5m) under the first phase of DECC’s Energy Entrepreneurs Fund.
The funding is part of a £35m fund announced in April 2012, and aims to support energy efficiency technologies such as building control systems, advanced lighting systems and space heating and cooling technologies, alongside power generation and energy storage technologies including fuel cells, biomass boilers and heat pumps.
The DECC funding will help KiWi Power develop smart energy demand controls and systems by drastically reducing the costs and therefore making demand response participation more attractive to UK businesses.
In addition to the Energy Entrepreneurs Fund, KiWi Power, as part of consortium led by Moixa Technology, has been awarded a first phase contract for DECC’s Energy Storage Demonstrator competition. This project will involve a feasibility study and detailed planning for a large-scale grid storage demonstrator.
A proposed bid for a second phase project aims to deliver a 1MWh+ grid-scale storage demonstrator of Moixa’s MASLOW distributed energy storage system across 750 homes/sites later in 2013 and 2014.
The project will compete for a share of £17m in further funding to support deployment. Project partners include Good Energy Ltd, KiWi Power Ltd, Northern Power Grid, G&P Batteries Ltd, SolarFair/AtmosClear SA and Aquion Energy Inc (USA).
