Sanken Electric Company in Japan has developed a novel LED street lamp that not only provides light from renewable energy, but can serve as an emergency power supply. The lamp draws its energy from a solar panel and small wind turbine to generate electricity for the LEDs, this will light up when people are nearby to provide illumination.
The streetlamps also contain an uninterruptible power supply and a standard home power socket. During power outages these can be used to provide power for electronic devices in an emergency situation.
Sanken Electric is going to sell the streetlamps to local governments and operators of commercial facilities, according to Nikkei News.
