‘Akkuteollisuus ry – Finnish Battery Industries’ was established on 16 January 2023 to enhance the visibility of the industry and its interests. Matti Hietanen, CEO of Finnish Minerals Group, was appointed its first Chair.
A statement from Finnish Minerals Group said Pia Vilenius of the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland was appointed as its Managing Director. The new association will operate under the umbrella of the Chemical Industry Federation.
Vilenius said: “For several years now, the Battery Group has been active in the Chemical Industry Federation – and now was a good time to establish a new association to make such interest promotion activities official. Thanks to new investments, the industry is becoming more important. For this reason, it was vital for the industry to establish its own association.”
Finnish Minerals said the battery industry investment potential in Finland is vast. The member companies plan to make investments worth €6 billion in the next five years with revenue of €9 billion. There are estimated to be 6,000 employees in the industry, with a further 14,000 indirectly.
The Battery Industry Association’s founding members include Suomen Malmijalostus Oy, Terrafame Oy, Umicore Finland Oy, Jervois Finland Oy, Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta Oy, Fortum Battery Recycling Oy, BASF Battery Materials Finland Oy, Keliber Oy and CNGR Finland Oy.
