UK based research and development firm Ilika has announced the start of its pilot production of solid-state batteries.
The pilot line in Southampton was officially opened on 21 November 2014, but production was held off until technical targets required for solid-state battery production were met.
Deposition rates of 2 microns/hour, have been achieved and increases in this rate are expected as the pilot line’s capabilities are tested further, say the company.
Operational parameters of the pilot line are currently being developed to maximise the yield and performance of the batteries.
Batches of batteries and performance data for evaluation by commercial partners are set to be released in 2015.
Ilika initially intends to produce micro-battery prototypes designed for powering wireless sensors, known as the “Internet of Things”.
Ilika is holding discussions with potential partners capable of manufacturing full production lines at industrial scale.
