APS still months from closing investigation into US lithium-ion ESS explosion

An investigation into the fire at a 2MW/2MWh lithium-ion energy storage system in Arizona, US, is expected to close by the end of the year— eight months after the incident at the Arizona Public Service (APS) owned facility.

The final battery rack from APS’s McMicken site in Surprise is at a forensics laboratory in Michigan for analysis, after a specialty laboratory in Scottsdale removed it last month.

Battery discharging under way for Arizona BESS probe

The team investigating an explosion at a lithium-ion grid-scale battery storage facility in Arizona say it could be weeks before the cause of the accident is known.

A probe was launched by the Arizona Public Service (APS) utility after its 2MW/2MWh McMicken energy storage system in the city of Surprise suffered what was described as a “catastrophic failure” last April.

AES batteries boost for Arizona community

Two 4MWh lithium-ion battery storage systems are being installed to boost electricity supply to a growing community in rural Arizona, instead of rebuilding 20 miles of power lines.

The Arizona Public Service (APS) said its installation of the AES Energy Storage Advancion batteries in Punkin Center makes it one of the first utilities in the country to use batteries in place of traditional infrastructure.

Desert test for AES batteries

Arizona Public Service (APS) has installed two 2MW/2MWh lithium-ion battery systems from AES Energy Storage to test the technology’s performance in the desert temperatures of Phoenix.

The two battery systems have been put in two different locations along a feeder to a distribution grid as part of a solar program.
