US energy storage deployment up 243% as utilities embrace lithium-ion battery power

The US adoption of battery energy storage saw a massive increase in 2015 with total deployment rising by more than 150MW — with lithium-ion being used in 96% of systems.

During 2015 the US deployed 221MW/ 161MWh, up from 65MW/ 86MWh in 2014, according to the GTM Research/Energy Storage Association’s U.S. Energy Storage Monitor 2015 Year in Review report.

UK must encourage investment in energy storage, says report

The UK must find new ways to encourage investment in energy storage, advises a recent report from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).


The report, titled Energy Storage: The missing link in the UK’s energy commitments, presents an overview of current energy storage technologies in light of how each can help the nation to meet its 2020 renewable energy targets, which are ‘unlikely’ to be achieved without significant investment in storage, according to IMechE.

Duke Energy's Notrees lead-acid battery project scoops energy storage award

Duke Energy's Notrees Battery Storage Project in Texas scooped the utility-scale energy storage innovation award at the 2013 Energy Storage North America (ESNA) Conference and Expo in San Jose, California.

The project's 36 MW advanced lead-acid battery helps smooth the naturally variable output from Duke Energy's 153 MW Notrees Wind Power Project. By storing energy generated by the wind farm, the project can respond quickly to regulate frequency and provide ancillary services for grid management.

The project has been operating since late 2012. Duke Energy matched a $22m Department of Energy grant to develop the project, and Texas-based Xtreme Power designed and installed the battery.

Award winners were judged on services provided to the grid, financing options, ownership model and technology strengths.
