Kore Power choses site for its US-owned lithium-ion gigafactory

Tue, 08/10/2021 - 16:07 -- paul Crompton

Lithium-ion battery start-up Kore Power has confirmed that its gigafactory will be built in Arizona, US.

The one million square foot manufacturing facility in Maricopa County will support up to 12GWh of battery cell production for electric vehicles and power grid applications.

The US company, founded in 2018, plans to start construction of the facility, dubbed KOREPlex, by the end of the year with the goal of beginning production in Q2 2023.

Arizona governor Doug Ducey said the plant would “position Arizona as an anchor in the global battery manufacturing supply chain”.

Kore’s new plant will add to its annual production capacity of 2GWh that is in the process of scaling up to 6GWh.

KOREPlex will operate with net-zero carbon emissions through strategic partnerships and solar-plus- and storage co-generation.

Lindsay Gorrill, Kore Power CEO, said: “We needed a location for our factory that had a track record of supporting energy storage, a growing clean transportation sector, and a workforce that could deliver American-made battery technology that the supply chain so desperately needs. Arizona hit a home run.”

The decision comes just under two years after Kore first announced it would build a gigafactory in the US.

BEST reported in February how Idaho-headquartered Kore had narrowed the site for its 12GWh plant down to either Arizona, Florida or Texas

Kore said it picked the Arizona site as it offered proximity to complimentary industries such as e-mobility, solar, semiconductor, and utilities, workforce and logistics capacity, and a pro-business tax and regulatory environment.

Kore Power shortlists three sites for US lithium-ion manufacturing facility

Battery maker Kore Power is a step closer this week to opening its US lithium-ion gigafactory.

Idaho-headquartered Kore has narrowed the site for its 12GWh plant down to either Arizona, Florida or Texas.

The company plans to announce the site this summer.

The decision comes just under two years after Kore first announced it would build a gigafactory in the US.

The planned one-million square-foot manufacturing facility will support up to 12GWh of battery cell production for the US’ lithium-ion battery supply chain for grid and electric vehicle applications.

Kore’s executive team is looking at the quantitative monetary analysis of each location, as well as an in-depth qualitative evaluation of each state, region, and specific site before making a final decision.

The three sites were chosen for their energy storage, manufacturing and electric transportation opportunities.

Other factors for selecting these states include:

• Proximity to continental transportation arterials and international deep-water ports
• World-leading clean energy utilities
• Friendly tax, regulatory and strong pro-business environment
• Established complimentary industries such as e-mobility, solar and semiconductor
• State and Local economic development incentivisation programs
• Available workforce capacity
• Local community support, cooperation, and commitment

The project will operate with net-zero carbon emissions through strategic partnerships and solar-plus- and storage co-generation.

Energy storage firm Kore Power announced on 22 October it plans to build a 10GWh lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in the US based on the model it is using at its 6GWh plant in China.

The location of the new plant has not been disclosed, with the Idaho company reviewing potential sites in a handful of states within the US.

US energy storage company Kore Power says it will have a 6GWh annual production capacity of its lithium battery energy storage systems (ESS) by the end of next year.

The Idaho-headquartered company aims to produce 5,000 of its nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) cells (or 10 of its Mark 1 ESS) a day next year.
