Bank agrees loan to help troubled South African utility deploy energy storage

China headquartered New Development Bank (NDB) has agreed to a ZAR6billion ($420 million) loan to South African power utility Eskom to build up to 360MW of energy storage in the country.

Troubled Eskom, which has carried out load shedding in the form of rolling blackouts across the country, is believed to be looking at 90 sites in the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal.

Metair completes Romanian battery factory

South African battery firm Metair has completed the installation of its first lithium-ion cell manufacturing and assembly facility in Bucharest, Romania. 

The facility will have a production capacity of between 600,000 and a million cells per year when production begins in the second quarter of 2020.

This project marks the conclusion of Metair's €13.6 million ($15 million) greenfield development capital for lithium-ion technology, started in 2017.

ABB to install flywheel-based stabiliser at South African HQ

Power and automation technology group ABB is using its flywheel energy storage technology to add grid stability to the most remote parts of the planet.

The Swiss firm is already present in a number of African countries but is now adding South Africa, Kenya and Western Australia to its list.
