Toshiba Corporation has supplied two lithium-ion energy storage systems to Kyushu Electric Power Co in Japan as part of an island-based renewable energies demonstration project.
The systems will be installed at substations on the islands of Tanegashima and Amamioshima at the southwestern tip of the Japanese island of Kyushu. The maximum output and capacity of the systems are 3MW and 1.161MWh for Tanegashima Island and 2MW and 0.78MWh for Amamioshima Island.
The project will trial the integration of battery systems to assist in the management of frequency regulation and maintaining power supply on the remote islands to be able to increase the amount of power generated from renewable energy sources.
The systems will feature Toshiba’s SCiB lithium-ion batteries that can support more than 10,000 charge-discharge cycles and operate well when rapidly charging and discharging.
