US co-ops ‘cashing in on energy storage’

The value of the US battery storage market could grow from $300 million a year to as much as $3 billion by 2020— adding up to rich pickings for electricity distribution cooperatives, according to a new report.

Capital costs for battery systems could fall below $300 per kilowatt hour this year as “significant expansion” boost economies of scale for the manufacture of cells and battery packs, said the report by national rural industries finance institution CoBank.

Bosch steps back from ‘too risky’ cells production

German auto-parts maker Bosch has confirmed it is dropping plans to manufacture battery cells and “disbanding” battery-related research as the result of “a lengthy economic assessment”.

Bosch said investing in the commercialisation of cell technologies itself— whether improved existing technologies or future ones— is “too risky” and it will instead focus on out-sourcing.

UK gets first MW grid-scale lithium-ion energy storage system

Great Britain is to test its first battery system to provide grid-frequency after a partnership between energy utility firm National Grid and UK based Renewable Energy Systems (RES).

The 20MW battery storage system will provide a dynamic frequency response service with a second of a deviation, either higher or lower than 50Hz, being detected.

Saft and ECO-H Technologies supply hybrid gensets to oil rigs

The ECO-H is the first-to-market hybrid genset with an integrated battery system.

Saft has entered a contract with Ontario-based ECO-H Technologies, part of AVL Group, to supply a lithium-ion battery system for ECO-H’s Hybrid Power Management System designed for the oil and gas industry.

The hybrid generator system will use Saft’s Intensium Flex battery to reduce the fuel consumption by switching to battery power, thus resulting in greater energy efficiency on oil and gas rigs. The Intensium Flex has a capacity of 500kW with 525kWh available. It will in turn provide prime power, load levelling and peak shaving services.

The ECO-H is the first-to-market hybrid genset with an integrated battery system. Hybrid systems are intended to be more efficient than generators as the battery works harder, resulting in lower fuel consumption, emissions and operating costs.

Ten ECO-H systems have been purchased for installation throughout 2014 to offshore rigs. The deal marks Saft’s entry to a new market; President of Saft America, Thomas Alcide, said the company anticipates future growth in the industrial sector will be generated by the deal.
