SABIC takes majority stake in nanotech firm Black Diamond Structures

Mon, 01/28/2019 - 00:00 -- Hugh Finzel

Chemicals group SABIC has taken a majority stake in nanotechnology company Black Diamond Structures (BDS).

BDS produces Molecular Rebar, “a proprietary technology of modified carbon nanotubes” reported to boost the performance of both lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries.

Molecular Rebar delivers “clean and discrete carbon nanotubes of uniform aspect ratio”, reducing their tendency— in comparison to conventional carbon nanotubes— to get entangled, cake, and hold high residual impurities, BDS said.

11 year-old scientist steals BCI show

If there were an award for ‘showstopper performance’ at BCI’s annual convention in Arizona last week 11 year-old Gitanjali Rao would have won hands down.

Not only did the seventh-grader (pictured), recently named as America’s Top Young Scientist, give a rousing account of her research worthy of a seasoned conference speaker— she knew her stuff!

Self-healing Li-ion batteries have been developed in China

Wed, 11/02/2016 - 13:55 -- Paul Crompton
Self-healing Li-ion batteries have been developed in China

Chinese scientists have used carbon nanotubes to develop a thin, flexible lithium-ion battery that can heal itself after breaking, according to reports by Angewandte Chemie.

The battery has self-healing abilities, which even after completely breaking apart, can grow back together without significant impact on its electrochemical properties.
