Glencore ‘in triangular lithium deal’ with China’s CATL and VW

Switzerland-based mining company Glencore has reportedly signed a deal to supply cobalt materials to a Chinese lithium battery manufacturer – who would in turn sell batteries for Volkswagen’s (VW) electric vehicles.

According to Reuters, the deal would see Glencore sell up to 20,000 tonnes of cobalt products to CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd), a China-based battery giant who also supplies EV batteries to carmaker BMW.

Daimler-BAIC invest in Beijing batteries plant

A new manufacturing plant for “premium e-batteries” and electric vehicles is to be built in Beijing by Germany’s Daimler and its Chinese joint venture (JV) partner BAIC.

Daimler and BAIC intend to jointly invest a total of CNY5 billion ($736.6 million) in the production of Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz brand battery electric vehicles (BEVs) at the plant, which will be operated by the firms’ Beijing Benz Automotive Co., Ltd., (BBAC) JV.

China’s Camel expands lead recycling business

Camel Group Co., Ltd., a China-based lead-acid battery manufacturer, has announced plans to invest CNY35 million ($5.2 million) to form a waste battery recycling joint venture (JV) business with a domestic investor.

Camel has signed a cooperation and investment agreement for the JV with Lei Jia, an investor from China’s Anhui Province, who will invest CNY15 million ($2.2 million) in the project. The new business, tentatively named Camel Group Anhui Renewable Resources Co., Ltd., would have a total registered capital of CNY50 million ($7.4 million).

Chinese province urges support for faster lead-acid growth

The Government of China’s Hunan Province has called for domestic policies to support a speeding-up of the industrial development of lead-acid batteries.

Hunan said in an official statement that this is a crucial period for lead-acid battery technology, as China’s national Government plans to reduce subsidies for new energy vehicles by 20% compared to 2016 levels – phasing out subsidies completely by 2020.

Foxconn ‘plans major Li battery investments’ in China

Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer Foxconn is reportedly planning to invest a total of CNY25 billion ($3.7 billion) in several projects as part of the development of a new energy battery R&D centre and production base in Kunshan, in China’s Jiangsu Province.

China’s state Xinhua News Agency said CNY8 billion ($1.2 billion) will be invested in the first phase, as agreed in a strategic cooperation agreement the company signed with the Kunshan government.

BAIC ‘in batteries purchase deal’

China’s automaker BAIC BJEV is set to purchase 80,000 automotive batteries, worth a total of CNY3.7 billion ($541.6 million), from renewable battery system supplier Pride by the end of this year, according to Chinese media.

Sohu reported that Pride, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Guangdong Dongfang Precision Science & Technology, a China-based printing machine maker, has signed a strategic procurement contract for 2017 with the leading new energy vehicle manufacturer.

China’s battery makers urged to boost production for e-cars

China is reportedly urging the country’s battery makers to redouble their efforts to keep pace with demand for products, driven by the “rapidly growing” domestic new energy vehicles industry.

According to China’s Sina Finance, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has warned the battery sector “is currently finding it difficult to keep up with demand” from new energy vehicle manufacturers.

Chloride Technical & Trading has delivered an Atelier Roche punching system to an unnamed battery maker in China, senior project engineer Mike Dunn (pictured) told BBB.

Its a first for the company and an acceptance from Chinese lead acid manufacturers that punched grid is the way forward if you want to make excellent VRLA batteries, he said.

Battery production in China is picking up again after a sluggish start to 2017. 

Shanghai Metals Market (SMM) reports some Chinese battery producers are increasing their production levels by 10-20% as demand turns positive again.

Nissan in talks to sell EV battery unit

Nissan is considering the sale of its majority stake in the rechargeable battery unit joint venture it has set up in China with NEC.

The Japanese carmaker has reportedly been seeking a buyer for its share of Automotive Energy Supply Corp (AESC) since last year, as it may be cheaper to buy batteries for its Leaf electric cars from other suppliers.
