Grid-scale ESS test centre opens with flow battery project

Flow battery systems are to be the first energy storage technology evaluated at a new research centre in the US state of Alabama.

The Energy Storage Research Center (ESRC), opened on 16 July by the independent Southern Research organisation, will initially test systems developed by California-based Avalon Battery.

World Bank leads new push for battery storage

An international “technology-neutral” partnership to expand the use of energy storage systems in developing countries has been launched by 30 organisations led by the World Bank.

The Energy Storage Partnership (ESP) aims to “catalyse a new market for batteries”, beyond the current focus on the market to supply electric vehicles, the bank said.

Battery makers sign up for BESS safety taskforce

Manufacturers and users of battery storage systems have backed an industry-led initiative in the US to “prioritise safety” in the production and operation of equipment.

The move came amidst on going concerns about the risk of fires from lithium batteries and cells— and just days before an explosion at a grid-scale battery storage facility in the US.
