Regulators boost for BESS in US power markets

Electricity regulators in the US have scrapped measures that prevented energy storage from competing in the country’s wholesale power markets.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) voted on 15 February to approve a new rule that allows grid operators to use technologies including batteries and flywheel systems to dispatch power, set energy prices and offer capacity, energy and ancillary services.

3,000MW storage target call for Arizona

3,000MW storage target call for Arizona

Energy regulators in Arizona are being urged to consider a package of proposals that would see the state deploy 3,000MW of energy storage by 2023— and generate 80% of the state’s power needs from “clean energy”.

The blueprint for energy reform, presented by Arizona Corporation Commission member Andy Tobin (pictured), said the 3,000MW target was “by far the largest such goal in the US” and could be “made possible by storage markets which have recently seen drastic improvements in technology along with falling costs”.

Will regulator thwart green energy bid?

Plans to invest $200 million in a lithium-ion storage facility in the US hang in the balance in a row over ‘price protectionism’ and the use of renewable energy to charge the batteries.

Franklin Energy Storage Projects has said the proposed Idaho facility— which would include four 25MW battery storage units— qualifies for a 20-year contract under a federal law promoting alternative energy.

‘Heat is on for Australian Tesla battery’, expert warns

The Tesla battery built to beat power cuts in South Australia could fail to deliver— and instead prompt a backlash against the technology, a prominent energy storage expert warns in the winter issue of Batteries and Energy Storage Technology Magazine.

The 100MW lithium-ion powerpack dubbed the world’s biggest battery could fail to live up to the hype surrounding its installation in the state last month through no fault of its own, because a host of other issues including a fragmented regulatory environment and creaking infrastructure, BEST reports.
