Vanadium redox flow batteries bid for Australia storage trial

Renewables storage firm Vsun Energy is bidding to use vanadium redox flow (VRFB) batteries in a trial standalone power systems (SPS) project in Western Australia (WA).

WA’s energy minister Ben Wyatt has given the green light for electricity distributor Western Power to conduct the SPS demonstration within part of the state’s South West Interconnected Network— with 60 locations earmarked to take part.

Nissan plant ‘offers energy storage from battery recycling’

Nissan has opened an electric vehicle battery recycling facility in Japan which will also provide energy storage systems for the area.

The plant in Namie will be run by 4R Energy, a joint venture between Nissan and the Sumitomo Corporation.

Li-Ion maker Alelion acquires BESS tech firm

Sweden-based lithium-ion battery firm Alelion Energy Systems has acquired the whole portfolio of Caterva— a German liquidation company specialising in advanced technology for energy storage systems.

Alelion said the deal price amounts to SEK14 million ($1.7m), which corresponds to about 10% of previously invested capital and includes “a patent portfolio related to the optimisation of energy storage”.

Rolls-Royce joins UK ‘polymer energy storage’ research

Rolls-Royce is teaming up with UK-based material research company Superdielectrics to develop advanced energy storage systems using polymers.

Rolls-Royce said the collaboration agreement would see the firm combine its material science and technical expertise with Superdielectrics’ “novel hydrophilic polymers— that have been shown to have potentially outstanding energy storage properties”.

US co-ops ‘cashing in on energy storage’

The value of the US battery storage market could grow from $300 million a year to as much as $3 billion by 2020— adding up to rich pickings for electricity distribution cooperatives, according to a new report.

Capital costs for battery systems could fall below $300 per kilowatt hour this year as “significant expansion” boost economies of scale for the manufacture of cells and battery packs, said the report by national rural industries finance institution CoBank.

UK power market success for grid battery project

One of the first investor-owned grid-scale lithium-ion battery storage projects in the UK has been pre-qualified to supply backup power to the national grid following a capacity market auction, BBB can reveal.

Grid Battery Storage (GBSL), which formed a partnership last year with Germany’s Siemens to launch four grid-related battery projects, was among the winners of Britain’s capacity market auction.

Jordan ‘backs new energy storage plan’

Jordan’s government has reportedly agreed on proposals for a $40 million battery facility to push forward the country’s energy storage ambitions.

The government has signed a memorandum of understanding with 23 international firms and consortia to build a battery storage facility with a capacity of “at least” 30MW, according to The Jordan Times.

A telecoms operator in Montenegro has signed a 10-year lithium-ion battery storage supply contract for its cell towers situated across the country.

Crnogorski Telekom (CT), part of Deutsche Telekom, currently uses a combination of diesel generators and lead-acid batteries for backup power.

Wärtsilä adds to Massachusetts battery power target

A subsidiary of Finland’s Wärtsilä Corporation is to install an “advanced energy storage system” to support grid power delivery in the US state of Massachusetts.

US-based Greensmith Energy Storage Technology has been selected to provide the 1 MW/2MWh battery system, which uses LG Chem batteries and Sungrow inverters, to utility Origis Energy USA.

Battery-solar plans inch ahead in Western Australia

Proposals that pave the way for a battery storage facility of up to 20MWh to be built alongside a solar farm in Western Australia have taken a step forward.

Australian firm Carnegie Clean Energy has been given the go-ahead to negotiate a lease to build the battery and a solar plant of up to 100MW at the site, 26km southwest of Kalgoorlie.
