Lead-acid firm shows intent with Li-ion ESS deployment on Greek island

A project deploying five lithium-ion residential energy storage systems in Greece is further proof that even a lead-acid battery brand with more than 130 years of history must move with the times.

German firm Varta proved that even a brand with a rich history in the lead-acid market is willing to adapt with the deployment last month of its ‘Pulse’ lithium–ion ESSs as part of the European project WiseGRID.

Sunlight takes a shine to lithium with new ‘smart battery’

Greek lead-acid battery maker Sunlight is entering the electrical industrial vehicles (eIVs) market with the launch of a “smart lithium batteries” line.

Sunlight said the debut of its ‘Li.On Force’ follows “a multi-year intensive research plan” to produce batteries “that combine the advantages of batteries featuring lithium technology” with applications of Internet of Things technology.

A battery management system relays performance and other data in real time to a Sunlight control centre via the Cloud.

Loan deal expansion plan for Greek lead-acid maker Sunlight

Greek lead-acid battery maker Sunlight is to expand manufacturing and new product development boosted by a €12.5 million (US$14.2m) financial shot in the arm from the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Sunlight, part of the Olympia Group, said it will “significantly increase manufacturing capacity” at its plant in Xanthi, northern Greece thanks to the loan— the first support for industrial investment in Greece under a new EIB lending initiative backed by the European Fund for Strategic Investments.
