Uber plans for electric flying taxis strictly for the birds?

Flushed with its success in the global taxi business, Uber believes the sky is the limit for its next big venture— battery-powered flying cabs.

The company’s plans for its new service to start “full-scale operations” in some cities within the next 12-15 years were unveiled to some of the world’s leading battery experts at last week’s Florida International Battery Seminar & Exhibit.

Investors ‘lining up' to back battery storage projects

Battery entrepreneurs and established industry ‘big players’ are being urged to take advantage of a wealth of support said to be on offer from global investors.

The EV batteries and stationary storage market is now “astronomically large”— and has caught the attention of venture capitalists, according to the CEO of Volta Energy Technologies Jeffrey Chamberlain (pictured right).

Cheaper lithium batteries ‘will hamper recycling’

The launch of modern— and increasingly lower-priced EV lithium-ion batteries— is likely to hamper moves to encourage recycling, a battery expert has warned.

Mike Fetcenko (pictured), MD of BASF Battery Materials North America, said at last week’s International Battery Seminar and Exhibit in Florida: “The economics of recycling for lithium are not mature and they have to become more so.”

Regulator warns of potential total air transport ban on batteries

A top US regulatory official has held out the prospect of airlines totally halting transports of batteries unless changes are made to existing safety requirements.

Janet McLaughlin, director of the Federal Aviation Agency’s HazMat Safety Programme, indicated the move could be on the cards by air freight operators amid increasing fears of fire risks.
