Doubt over loan deal for South Australia mega-battery project

Plans for a 120MW battery storage project in South Australia could be in doubt— with a pre-election loan for the scheme awarded by the outgoing state government possibly under review by the new administration.

Former state premier Jay Weatherill approved the AUD10 million loan for the project by Australia’s ZEN Energy— part of the GFG Alliance business empire of British billionaire Sanjeev Gupta (pictured)— hours before Weatherill’s Labor Party lost power on 17 March to the opposition Liberals.

Sonnen set for Australia battery battle with Tesla

German battery storage firm Sonnen is to open a major production plant in South Australia— squaring up to business rival Tesla in the ‘backyard’ of the US titan’s 100MW Powerpack battery project.

Sonnen confirmed to BBB it plans to manufacture 50,000 of its lithium iron phosphate battery storage systems over the next five years in Adelaide. The company will also switch its Australian HQ to Adelaide from Sydney.

South Australia in new Tesla deal for home batteries

South Australia has done a fresh batteries deal with Tesla— this time to provide the US firm’s Powerwall 2 units free to up to 50,000 homes to create the “world’s largest virtual power plant”.

The state government will provide one of the 13.5kWh lithium-ion batteries to each home as part of the solar-energy storage project.

Tesla chosen for world’s biggest battery in Australia

Tesla is to deliver the world’s largest lithium-ion battery in South Australia – with a pledge to supply the system within 100 days or offer it free of charge.

Under the terms of the deal, with South Australia’s state government,  (the financial details of which have not been released), Tesla will provide the 100MW/129MWh Powerpack system to be paired with French utility Neoen’s Hornsdale wind farm near Jamestown.
