Japanese sell battery businesses to China

Nissan has sold its battery business to GSR Capital, a Chinese private equity firm.

Nissan said it will first take full control of the Automotive Energy Supply Corporation (AESC), by acquiring the rest of 49% shares from NEC, to pave the way for the GSR deal.

World’s largest offshore wind, battery proposal

Offshore wind farm developer Deepwater Wind has unveiled proposals for what it claims is the world’s largest combined offshore wind and energy storage project.

Named Revolution Wind, the project envisages a 144MW wind farm off the coast of Massachusetts – about 12 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard – with operations and the 40MWh Tesla battery storage system based in New Bedford.

Chinese manufacturers open 21700 cell lines

21700 lithium-ion cells, used in Tesla’s Model 3 electric vehicle, have been put into production in China by two of the country’s largest Li-ion battery makers. 

Tianjin Lishen Battery Joint-Stock Co Ltd is investing ¥2.1 billion ($312.6 million) in the project andaims to achieve production capacity of 4GWhEVE Energy Co Ltd, which is investing ¥2 billion ($297.7M), says its production line has the highest level of automation in the country and expects to reach its capacity of 3.5GWh later this year.

Go Electric’s second military BESS project

Indiana-based energy equipment and solution provider Go Electric Inc. has won a $1.7 million contact to supply a 1MW/1MWh lithium-ion grid-tied battery energy storage system (BESS) to a military depot in Tooele, Utah.

The contract is awarded by Perini Management Services, Inc. (PMSI), designing and constructing management services to US military, will interconnect Go Electric’s BESS to the Tooele Army Depot’s (TEAD) existing 46kV line, its self-sufficient microgrid, which providing the TEAD with energy security and resiliency.

Exide Industries, the Indian lead-acid battery maker, is gearing up to ride the next wave of growth with a foray in lithium-ion batteries.

"We are in a very disruptive stage as far as the battery industry is concerned. There is so much talk about e-buses, e-cars, etc. Elon Musk is creating such a hype. We are keeping our plans flexible currently.

Cobalt crisis forces Koreans to act

Amid growing demand for the lithium-ion batteries that power electric vehicles and smartphones, cobalt, the key energy metal, has seen a decline in production this year driven mainly by the unstable political situation of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which accounts for more than half of global cobalt production.

This month, the price of cobalt came to $61,000 per ton, a 90% jump from early in the year, according to industry data.

Eaton to bring Li-ion UPS into Asia

Work is under way in Australia on an AUD11 ($8.3) million project to develop ultra-thin flexible screen-printed batteries for portable devices and intermittent renewable energy.

Brisbane-based battery energy storage firm Printed Energy said the innovation is a step closer to being made commercially available thanks to research carried out jointly by the University of New South Wales and University of Queensland.

One of the largest solar+storage portfolios in the US

A series of 12 solar-plus-storage projects with a combined capacity of 12MWh are expected to start operating by October in North Carolina – which claims to have “one of the largest solar-plus-storage portfolios” in the US.

The projects, featuring LG Chem’s lithium-ion batteries, will be co-developed by US solar company Cypress Creek Renewables (CCR), construction firm United Renewable Energy (URE) and electric cooperative Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation (BEMC).

Tesla chosen for world’s biggest battery in Australia

Tesla is to deliver the world’s largest lithium-ion battery in South Australia – with a pledge to supply the system within 100 days or offer it free of charge.

Under the terms of the deal, with South Australia’s state government,  (the financial details of which have not been released), Tesla will provide the 100MW/129MWh Powerpack system to be paired with French utility Neoen’s Hornsdale wind farm near Jamestown.
